Incorrectly chosen foundation, the most common and the biggest makeup fail.
It doesn’t only look caricatural, but also certainly makes us older-looking.
A well-chosen foundation is not only its color, which blends perfectly with the skin. It’s also the formula, consistency, composition, performance and purpose… there are a lot of criteria, but the first impression can be made only once – so before you show people your face think about whether the foundation that you put on is THE ONE for sure.
How do you choose a good foundation for your face?
Before you start choosing the foundation shade, think about what you expect from this cosmetic. It must meet the demands of your skin. If you have a dry complexion – you should not choose heavy, full coverage product that will overburden the skin. It would also be a bad idea to choose a mattifying foundation – it contains ingredients that regulate sebaceous glands and, unfortunately, can additionally dry out the skin. The foundation for sensitive complexion should be carefully selected so that it does not dry out the skin, and for mature skin – it should minimize wrinkles and discolouration.
- dry skin – choose light, semi-liquid and nutritious water-based foundation that will not only hide imperfections but also provide the skin with proper hydration and protect against adverse weather conditions
- sensitive skin – your foundation should mainly protect and soothe the skin; the ideal solution will be a mineral, powdered foundation that not only unifies the skin but also cures and soothes irritations
- combination skin – you can choose a foundation for oily skin or just a delicate colouring BB cream with a nourishing effect;
- oily skin – choose a foundation that will not overload the skin (it should not be comedogenic nor clog pores), but give it a satin matte finish;
- capillary skin – your foundation should have good coverage so that the erythema and spider veins on the skin will “hid” under the layer of the foundation. If you have a strong reddened skin it is good to support it with a special green base camouflaging redness;
- mature skin – needs a proper dose of brightening and coverage; choose a foundation with coverage properties (it does not have to be strong covering), it is also important that your foundation scatters light and does not settle in the fine lines of the face (it should not be too dense so that it does not weigh the skin); foundations for mature skin should also have a rich composition to take proper care of demanding skin.
How to choose the colour of foundation for your skin?
Once you know what kind of foundation you are looking for – focus on choosing the right shade. To do this well, make sure to follow a few basic rules:
- Never check the foundation on the wrist – it is not true that our face has the same shade as the skin next to the palm of your hand. This is especially disastrous in the summer when hands and forearms are tanning faster. The foundation should always be tested on the jawline – this is where the result is the most reliable.
- Do not test the foundation in the drugstore – remember that in such a place you are surrounded with artificial fluorescent light, which makes the shades look completely different from daylight.
- Ask the sales assistant for samples – it is best to choose 3 shades, which are similar to each other in terms of colour. Stores usually have free samples or tiny jars where you can apply a drop of publicly-available testers. Remember to mark them (describe) to know what foundation is in the given jar.
- Test the foundation at home in daylight. Apply each shade to the jaw line so that they are next to each other. Check the colours and immediately exclude the one that is the least natural and does not blend with the skin, or it is too dark.
- If you choose your colour – the rest of the sample can be used to determine how the foundation behaves on your face. Apply it to your face and wear it for a few hours. During this time, observe how your skin reacts to it.
- If you have not found the proper shade that fits your skin perfectly – do not choose any of them. Try to find another foundation among products that have a wider range of colours, or ask the makeup artist for help. Many women have problems with matching the foundation to their complexion – it may happen that your skin will look best with two shades blended together (in the right proportions).
Also, remember that in order for the foundation to “lie” well on the skin, it should sometimes be supported with a suitable makeup primer – it will prolong its durability and, at the same time, perfectly prepare the skin for makeup.
The secret to a beautiful, long-lasting and flawless makeup is not only a colourful cosmetic – it is important to take care and moisturize the skin on a daily basis, not forgetting about the exact makeup removal.
