Exfoliating socks – properties

Exfoliating socks are made of thin plastic that was soaked with a cosmetic in the form of gel. Active substances the gel contains are mostly fruit acids and moisturising agents, for example, allantoin. What’s important to mention, contrary to a callus remover or foot file, exfoliating socks don’t irritate skin. The concentration of acid is low, therefore, their action is completely safe.

How do exfoliating socks work?

In general, exfoliating socks work twofold: they exfoliate epidermis as well as moisturise and regenerate skin.

For epidermis exfoliation process responsible are fruit acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, silicic acid or citric acid. The process of exfoliation lasts approx. a week and starts one day after putting on the socks. During this treatment, skin becomes more prone to sun rays therefore such procedures (with the use of acids) should be carried out in autumn or winter, when body isn’t exposed to strong UV radiation. However, if you decide to apply exfoliating socks in late spring or summer, don’t forget to use a sunscreen with high SPF factor.

When it comes to moisturisation and strengthening of natural hydro-lipid barrier of foot skin, these are allantoin, urea or castor oil that handle the task. What’s essential, although exfoliating socks have substances responsible for hydrating and softening skin, once you finish the treatment (so after more or less a week), reach for moisturizers that will prolong the effect of smooth foot skin.

Exfoliating socks – how to use them?

Naturally, exfoliating socks should be left on feet for the period indicated by the producer. If skin doesn’t have allergy tendencies and tolerates acids well, the socks can sit on feet for the maximum period of time mentioned on the label. Exfoliating socks have to be applied to wet feet and when taken off, you have to wash feet precisely and towel the skin. A week after the procedure it’s advised against using any food scrubs, pumice and any kind of foot files. It’s recommended to moisturise foot skin with creams and oils in order to encourage dead epidermis cells to fall out within a few days.
