How Air-Conditioning Affects your Skin? 7 Rules for the ‘Chilly’ Skin Care

A nice chill lets us get through hot days and increases effectiveness at work. Sadly, AC systems largely damage skin, dry it out and trigger irritations. Rules for treating skin in air-con rooms are surely worth knowing.

How air-conditioning affects the skin?

Simply put: AC and skin are biggest enemies.

AC dehydrates and irritates the epidermis. If it’s not cleaned, it may be the cause of many unpleasant infections. Due to AC, the skin is flaking and smarting, extremely sensitive, there’s a burning sensation on lips. You should definitely remember that damaged skin layer is more exposed to further irritations. Staying in air-conditioned environment long, we expose our skin to the attack of germs, impurities and unfavorable weather changes: walking from the chilly room into the heat outside, we tire the skin with sudden changes of temperature so its functions are disturbed – the skin can get extremely dry or oily, getting open pores and blackheads.

7 rules of skin care in AC rooms

1. Keep moisturizing your skin – preferably with creams abounding in hyaluronic acid. Look for products filled with low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

2. Use thermal water and regularly spray it on the skin. Instead of water, you can use hydrosols e.g. rose, melissa or camomile to soothe, nourish and protect your skin from dehydration.

3. Use moisturizing masks – gel sheet masks make the best choice, being infused with moisturizing and reinforcing substances for the protective skin barrier. Mineral clays are also beneficial – full of minerals which condition the skin and perfectly heal irritated skin.

4. Apply natural oils which make up a very good source of vitamins, micro-elements, anti-aging phytosterols as well as they are composed of valuable omega fatty acids. Oils are natural emollients which give brilliant protection from the damaging external factors and slow down aging processes.

5. Try out the soothing power of Aloe – you can buy Aloe gels made up of 99% natural ingredients at drugstores. Non-greasy formula and easy application (the gel doesn’t drip off the skin as much as the Aloe juice). Aloe is a splendid substance alleviating all irritations, regenerating and preventing inflammations. It’s great at keeping the hydro-lipid balance.

6. Give up on mattifying blotting papers and products. In combination with AC, even oily skin starts to rebel and produces more sebum to protect itself from dehydration. Apply mattifying products before bedtime to regulate the work of sebaceous glands. During the day, choose light moisturising gels or creams which deliver relief and hydration, not leaving a greasy layer on the surface.

7. Keep your skin clean – regularly-performed exfoliation with a mild (gommage or mineral) scrub, which doesn’t require rubbing and doesn’t cause irritations, is a perfect way to free skin of all germs, dust, impurities and toxins. After doing a scrub, a soothing or moisturising mask is a good idea.
