They are invisible and dangerous, lurking to get you even at work. Bacteria, viruses, fungi as well as eye, skin and spine conditions. Of course, these are just some of the dangers we are exposed to at a computer desk. What’s the effect of office work on the skin?
Phones & cells
It’s hard to do without a phone in an office. What threats do phones entail? Besides the electromagnetic radiation affecting the brain, such devices have a negative effect on skin. Namely, sebum builds up on skin when you press the phone to the face. This leads to clogged pores, occurrence of blemishes and development of bacteria. Can you avoid such skin imperfections? Of course you can. Keep your phone clean, wipe it with a tissue or paper towel after a call.
Keyboard
There are lots of impurities between the keys: bacteria, dust, food leftovers. Believe it or not, there can be more bacteria on a keyboard than on a toilet seat! This results from the proliferation of fungi that feed on leftovers and the fact that office workers tend to skip a hand wash after using the toilet. Remember to clean your keyboard from time to time, remove the dirt and disinfect the keys.
Dirty AC air filter
Air-con is common in offices since it keeps the optimal temperature. If it’s regularly serviced, it shouldn’t pose a threat to our skin. However, if there’s no servicing maintenance, not only does it threaten the skin but also leads to serious problems with larynx, lungs and allergic reactions. The dirty filter is the most hazardous part of AC system. It might include bacteria, fungi and spores which are transferred in the office through using various devices.
Dry air
It has a negative effect on the skin, as well as on the eyesight and respiratory system. Dry air leads to atopy, inflammation, skin allergies, eye redness, breathing problems, larynx disorders and constant runny nose. According to appropriate services, the humidity levels in your workplace should range from 50% to 60%. If it’s different, workers may not feel well and they suffer from the above-said ailments.
Air humidifier
Theoretically, the humidifier is supposed to reduce the problem of dry air in the office. Contrary to the idea, devices that release the steam are really hazardous. They may make the skin extremely dry and dehydrated, spread the bacteria and inflammation. If the humidifier isn’t cleaned, we breathe in the air which leads to poorer immunity, breathing and vision problems.
Soap dispenser
This kind of product is likely to dry out the skin and cause irritation. With hard water, the problem is even bigger. To make things worse, if dispensers are not properly cleaned, they gather bacteria that we transfer to our faces.
